The goal

Arrange all your cards into valid groups, then declare. Groups are sequences (consecutive cards of the same suit) and sets (same rank, different suits).

Pure and impure sequences

A pure sequence uses no joker; most rummy formats require at least one before you can declare. An impure sequence uses a joker to fill a gap.

Jokers

Printed jokers and the selected wild joker can replace any card in impure sequences and sets, but not in your pure sequence.

Each turn

  1. 1.Pick a card from the closed deck or the open discard pile.
  2. 2.Rearrange your groups.
  3. 3.Discard one card to the open pile.
  4. 4.Declare when every card is in a valid group.

Common beginner mistakes

Holding too many high cards, ignoring the discard pile and declaring without a pure sequence are the fastest ways to lose points.

Common beginner mistakes

Holding high cards too long is the classic error — if you get caught, they add heavy points. Another is ignoring the pure sequence: without one, your hand can't be declared valid. Finally, don't pick from the open pile just because a card looks useful; it tells opponents what you're building.

Scoring example

Suppose your opponent declares and you're left holding K♠, Q♦ and 7♣ unmatched. Face cards usually count 10 each, so you'd carry 27 points. Discarding those high cards earlier would have cut the penalty.

Play only where legal and age-appropriate. Set limits before starting and never treat a game outcome as income.
